Joe’s Top Ten 30MOM Skits

By Joe Hornacek | January 18, 2024

Happy New Year! Time for a little chit of the chat, from me to you, hey! Cookie cutter guy. No just kidding. I am the cookie cutter guy——and here are the best selection of cookies from 1990 (holy moly) to now, 01-18-2024.

#10

Monks with Chrome Hatchets

Very nice shots filmed in the sun with water and saturated color effects. Very fun and funny song. Nice guitar playing by a very creative guitarist, if not the best I’ve ever seen.

Lectures II

A sequel to a skit with characters me and Jerry originally made in 1991, filmed over twenty years later. Good well-prepared acting and location—the ruins of the Pontiac Silverdome. Very funny moments and lots of laughter. Epic VHS-style editing and funny names.
Appeared on episode 15.

#8

Fall Fireballs

Very funny moments between the actors—with wrestling!  Dancing with funny music and video effects. This was shot on Friday, November 18th, 1994, the same week as “A Day in the Life of John Ryan” (Jerry kept track of this kind of thing sometimes). But it was edited way later in like 2006 during the time when editing with computers was the norm.

#7

The Holes

This was filmed during this trend where 90s kids and wannabe 70s hippie kids came together at this park in downtown Rochester. Plenty of raw talent from the actor and cameraman. A laid back vibe. Interesting yet calm and cool. The backstory was Jerry getting to know John Ryan and filming with him one-on-one for first time I think. Roland R-70 sounds and funky breaks make a solid soundtrack for this.

#6

Recordorama

This is the type of thing where we went into the studio around Christmas break just as our friend was on leave from Marine Corps basic training. Excellent creativity as the improv led to a kind of dreamy video experience. Lots of funny and artistic things. Very comfortable to watch and remember. It also makes you think that maybe you can accelerate art and creativity with help from the Marines.

#5

Getting Ill

This was a thingy that Jerry edited and made cool. We were trying to be expressive and creative and it ended up being like a slumber party. Funny moments and cool music, that feels like it could be on Tik Tok.

30MOM 20th Birthday

This skit stars Jerry and you can tell he was full of confidence. He was finishing grad school and this is the type of thing that, if we ever made it big, he would probably be doing all the time. It was well-written and planned, the timing of the editing along with the acting was superb. The dialogue was true to form and exciting to listen to along with the story and the ending which was on time and interesting.

#3

A Day in the Life of John Ryan

This was filmed a couple years after the Beastie Boys “Check Your Head” came out and we were all still really obsessed with wearing beanies. The character, story, location, and chance to film with a random younger group combined to make this work. We were lucky to have that footage and I felt total confidence having this footage on videotape and handing it to Jerry to edit.
Appeared on episode 12.

#2

Anton’s Salon TV Spot

This is cool because there are video glitches and the Anton’s Salon characters remind me of the classic movie “The Outsiders,” which is a vibe I don’t think was ever explored on 30MOM other than when Jerry’s brother Mike made an appearance in episode 13. The sexy model with different shades of purple and pink, the music is very cool to listen to, and the narration is hilarious. It also makes me think of the song “Get Down on It,” and that’s funny. Then, to top it off, Jessey’s character waves to the camera at the end and wipes his nose really funny.

#1

PCP Robot

This just clicked almost like I had dream about it before it happened in a past life. I remember wanting to do an actual movie without the puppets, in live-action with actors and build actual sets, but I did not have a story.
The main reason this was made was because we were all really serious about making movies at the time and it just kind of happened. I remember being so excited for some crazy reason at Rochester Park. I remember thinking to myself, just go crazy excited the best you ever were and hype beyond control. Then John spray paints “PCP Robot” on the back of the old A&P supermarket which is next to the park. Making PCP Robot was all about being excited and hype.
I made some cool robots with the inspiration of spray paint and a collection of electrical components that I accumulated from the the beat up U-matic decks sold at Dixieland Flea Market. The money earned to save for the business was used to pay for the merchandise which made me all the more confident to work with it. Like this was the major goal.
In PCP Robot, the opening is one of the coolest things. It may have been done before in a different movie, but I swear I saw this image in a past life or dream…or something about seeing it in the past. The cameras we were using made the film. Hi-8 high quality with saturated and fading color changes with cool sculptures, plus the combination of John Ryan’s music and a lucky sound effects CD we found at the Rochester public library.
Appeared on episode 12.

Honorable mentions: Can’t You See Me?, Razzmatazz, and the final See You ‘Round Man on Episode 8. Peace Out!
