I haven’t forgotten about the show. How could I? From the end of 1991 until early 1997 it was one of the things I thought most about. Dozens and dozens of episodes were made. . .in my head. Only 13 were actually completed…
I still think of things for the show. I’d like to do it again some day. Being older doesn’t bother me. How old was the cast of Monty Python? And what’s the average age of a cast member on Saturday Night Live, or Mad TV? I’ve thought of doing the Second City thing, trying to get onto SNL, but I like doing my own thing. A dream of mine is to host SNL one day, but that’s neither here nor there. There’s no age limit for comedy, and since this is MY show, it can grow/change with me. I’m not bothered by the fact that there would be few, if any, people from the original. There was no fixed cast. I think the only people who were on EVERY show were Joe and I. Anyway, I was always working with new people. . .it would be no different now.
I’ve tried to pick the show back up a couple of times in the last few years. Moving to CA in ’98 took me away from Public Access equipment, but I would have been embarrassed to use it then anyway. After all, Joe, Dan, and I spent a combined 10 or 12 grand buying vidshit – a camera, editing suite, music equipment, etc. After the falling out (which is a dandy of a soap opera I might write a book about someday), the equipment was split up and I sold my portion; I didn’t have the money to invest in new shit to recomplete the studio. . .and I was sick of Michigan and things and wanted to go to Hollywood and make movies there. But I did film some skit shit in California. It was cool, but the guys with me had no experience shooting and melted our expensive lights (I was working at a TV station then, a job I got in the hopes I could make movies again). This was my first time while working for Channel 6 that I shot shit for myself, and the last. Not only were the lights ruined, but when I went to playback the completed footage at the studio, the BetaCam player ate the tape! Not too long after that I quit (the manager kept treating me like an idiot novice because of the broken lights [I couldn’t tell him someone ELSE did it, I was responsible for the shit]) and moved back to Michigan (then moved back to Ventura, then to Lake Havasu City where I am now).
Oh Jesus Christ I didn’t think I was going to write this long. But – oh yeah – people know how to skip long, boring, obviously-intended-as-streaming-consciouness-therapy entries.
Google is the best search engine I think. Tonight I did a search for “30 Minutes Of Madness” and found a guy who trades rare bootleg tapes. He got a hold of 4 episodes of 30MOM somehow. How funny and cool really. Get yer tapes folks, before they appear on ebay and sell for kathousands! There’s no write up or anything, but it’s still neat :^)
For years now I’ve envisioned this stupid Barbara Waltersesque interview in, oh it would be 2022 (she’d be dead by then. . .though there’s cloning). I’d be interviewed about my career to date; the title of the piece would be “30 Years Of Madness.” Isn’t that just STUPID?
